Hair Follicle Anatomy
Hair is made of a protein called keratin. Hair follicle anchors into the skin. In the hair bulb, at the base of hair follicle, living cells divide and grow to build the hair shaft. Blood vessels nourish the cells in the hair bulb, and deliver hormones that modify hair growth and structure at different times of life.
Hair growth occurs in cycles consisting of three phases:
Anagen (growth phase): Most hair is growing at any given time. Each hair spends several years in this phase.
Catagen (transitional phase): Over a few weeks, hair growth slows and the hair follicle shrinks.
Telogen (resting phase): Over months, hair growth stops and the old hair detaches from the hair follicle. A new hair begins the growth phase, pushing the old hair out.
Hair Loss causes
First and foremost Hair loss is a result of inherited genetic factors and the overall aging process.
Severe illness or trauma, starvation, hormonal changes can also induce hair loss
Thyroid disease, iron deficiency anemia
Types of hair Loss
Non scarring hair loss presents with normal looking scalp with abundant hair follicles but empty
Scarring hair loss is a permanent destruction of the hair follicle
Hair loss can also be classified in alopecia areata ( patchy areas of hair loss), traumatic hair loss( excessive pulling), infection related
Diffuse hair loss is due to systemic diseases, chemotherapy, genetic or autoimmune disease where antibodies are formed against the hair follicle.
Available treatments
